Thyroid diet chart - foods to avoid during thyroid and foods to eat during thyroid

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck below Adam’s apple. The thyroid has two wings connected to the windpipe called the trachea. The thyroid is one of the many glands located throughout your body. They perform essential functions for your body. Their main job is to produce hormones that help your body in daily functioning.

There are times when these hormones act differently. Such conditions are known as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. In hyperthyroidism, hormones are out of the body’s limit and become excessive in number, whereas hypothyroidism is a condition where hormones are limited in numbers. Both conditions result in several diseases like Graves disease, Hashimoto’s disease, Goitre, etc.

We need to take the utmost care to tackle these conditions. The best way is to control and regulate your diet to minimize the effect of these conditions and improve your health quickly.

So let us see some of the foods that you should avoid to combat thyroid diseases

  • Alcohol

Consumption of alcohol can affect the production of thyroid hormones in the body. Alcohol will harm your thyroid gland, and it suppresses the gland’s ability to produce hormones. People with any thyroid conditions should avoid alcohol or minimize it as much as possible.

  • Brocolli

It would help if you avoided or minimized broccoli consumption as they are high in fibers, affecting the thyroid’s ability to produce hormones. They may block the thyroid’s ability to utilize iodine to produce hormones. So if you suffer from iodine deficiency, it is better to avoid or minimize the intake of Brocolli.

  • Processed foods

Processed foods are full of sodium which may affect people suffering from hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a condition that can affect blood pressure, and an increase in sodium may give a push to the problem. So it is better to avoid foods with high sodium.

  • Gluten foods

People suffering from hypothyroidism should avoid gluten found in foods like wheat and barley. They can consume gluten from whole wheat foods, which are high in fiber and other essential nutrients. Foods with good fiber may also control the problem of constipation. So the foods with high fiber are a better option here.

  • Fatty foods

Research suggests that foods with high fat may affect the thyroid’s ability to produce hormones. They might become a hindrance in the absorption of thyroid medicines. So it is advisable to cut all the fats from foods such as butter, cheese, fried foods, etc., to avoid inconvenience later.

  • Foods high in sugar

Hypothyroidism can result in slow metabolism, which makes it easy for the body to gain weight. Foods which are high in sugar have very high calorie and almost no nutrients. So we should eliminate sugar from our diet to maintain our figure during thyroid conditions.

  • Supplements

People suffering from thyroid conditions generally supplement themselves with iodine and selenium, which are essential for thyroid function. The problem arises when we increase them in excess. Chat with your doctor about the quantity of this supplement and any other supplement required along the way.

Now we know about the foods to stay away from, but some foods need your attention. These foods can prove to be a helping hand for your thyroid to function correctly. 

So let us have a look at some of the foods that should be part of your diet

  • Fruits

Fruits are full of essential vitamins and minerals which can help the thyroid to function correctly. Fruits such as apples, pears, oranges, berries, etc., are full of iodine, an essential mineral for thyroid functions. Fruits are also considered natural sweeteners that may give relief to your taste buds.


  • Nuts

Nuts like cashews and almonds are known to have an abundance of zinc, iron, and selenium. Iron and selenium are very crucial minerals for thyroid patients. Their deficiency can play a vital role in giving rise to thyroid issues. So replenish yourself with these essential minerals by including nuts in your diet.

  • Legumes

Legumes such as black beans, kidney beans, chickpeas, etc., are full of fibers that help prevent constipation, which is a big problem faced by thyroid patients. They ensure a proper digestive system and smooth bowel movements. Legumes should be a regular part of your diet but make sure you consume them in a limited quantity at once.

  • Whole wheat

Whole wheat foods such as oats, quinoa, brown rice, etc., are full of carbohydrates and fibers that help prevent constipation, which is a common issue during hypothyroidism. During hypothyroidism, your body’s metabolism tends to slow down, resulting in a slow digestion process. Fibers from whole wheat foods help in preventing slow bowel movements and ensures a smooth digestive process.

  • Yogurt

Iodine is an essential mineral for thyroid patients since it helps the thyroid gland in hormone production. Yogurt is one of those dairy products which are packed with iodine fulfilling our daily requirements. Therefore, we need to make sure that we include yogurt in our diet at any cost.
